DAMPER REPLACEMENT

Damper replacement improves airflow control in your fireplace system. A properly functioning damper helps regulate heat, prevent drafts, and improve overall efficiency and performance.

WHY DAMPER REPAIR MATTERS?

A properly functioning damper plays an important role in both fireplace performance and energy efficiency. The damper helps control airflow through the chimney system by opening during fireplace use and sealing closed when the fireplace is not in operation.

Over time, dampers can rust, warp, or fail to seal properly due to heat exposure and moisture intrusion. When this happens, outside air, rain, odors, and debris may enter the home, while heated or cooled indoor air can escape through the chimney. Replacing a damaged or ineffective damper helps restore proper draft control, improve efficiency, and protect the overall fireplace system.

WHAT WE REPAIR:

  • Broken dampers

  • Rusted or stuck dampers

  • Improper sealing dampers

  • Replacement of top-mount dampers

SIGNS TO LOOK FOR:

  • Smoke control issues

  • Draft problems

  • Heat loss

  • Damper won’t open/close

TRADITIONAL FIREPLACE DAMPERS

This section primarily applies to masonry chimney systems that utilize a traditional throat damper located directly above the fireplace opening. These dampers operate using a handle mechanism that opens and closes the metal flap to help regulate airflow through the chimney.

Over time, throat dampers may become difficult to operate due to rust, warping, or heat-related wear. If the damper housing remains in repairable condition, restoration may be possible to return the existing damper to proper working order. However, when damage is too extensive, replacing the original assembly with a top mount damper is often the more effective long-term solution.

TOP MOUNT DAMPERS

Top mount dampers are installed at the top of the chimney flue beneath the chimney cap and are designed to provide improved sealing and chimney protection. These dampers operate with a stainless steel cable or chain that extends down into the firebox for easy opening and closing.

In addition to helping control airflow, top mount dampers create a tighter seal when closed, which can help improve energy efficiency by reducing indoor air loss through the chimney. They also provide added protection against rain, downdrafts, debris, and animals entering the flue system, making them a popular upgrade option for many masonry fireplaces.
